18 EUROPEAN CURRENCY UNIT
(ECU) (Европейская валютная единица (ЭКЮ)) Средство обращения и счетная единица, созданная в 1979 г. и служащая резервным активом и расчетной единицей Европейской валютной системы (Еигореап Monetary System). Стоимость ЭКЮ рассчитывается как средневзвешенная величина корзины валют стран-членов Европейского сообщества (ЕС) (European Community (ЕС)); ев курс периодически пересматривается по мере изменения значения европейских валют и расширения ЕС за счет новых членов. ЭКЮ является также счетной единицей во всех операциях ЕС. Она обладает некоторыми сходными чертами со специальными правами заимствования (Special Drawing Rights) Международного валютного фонда (international Monetary Fund); однако резервы ЭКЮ не распределяются между отдельными странами, а накапливаются в Европейском фонде валютного сотрудничества (European Monetary Cooperation Fund). Приобрели популярность частные операции с использованием ЭКЮ в качестве номиналов ссуд и кредитов.
